The Jehovah Witnesses would rather pay a fine of $4,000 a day rather than turn over documents about sexual abuse within the church.

Courtesy of The Week:

The Jehovah's Witnesses have refused to turn over secret documents regarding alleged child sex abuse. And it's getting very, very costly.

A new report from Reveal details how the religion has been mandated to pay $4,000 for every day it doesn't release the documents. So far, the tab has reached $2 million.

It all stems from a court case in which a former Jehovah's Witness and sexual abuse victim sued the religion for not warning congregants they were practicing alongside a confessed child sexual abuser. The accused, Gonzalo Campos, has admitted to abusing children. But the religion's headquarters knew of his conviction and didn't tell the congregation, court documents show.

Reveal has obtained internal Jehovah's Witness documents that suggest this case is part of a much larger cover-up. One of the documents, for example, claims religious elders have been told to keep child abuse allegations a secret since at least 1989.

Okay if you are willing to pay over 2 million dollars in fines rather than reveal documents about sexual abuse that clearly means that there is rampant sexual abuse in this church.

I have long heard that there is an epidemic of sexual abuse within the Jehovah's Witnesses and this certainly lends credibility to those claims.

I am really enjoying Leah Remini's show about Scientology. She has said that she keeps getting contacted by former Jehovah's Witnesses to do a show about them as well. That would be good to although she wouldn't have the personal history to share the way she does with Scientology.

The roots of our family tree grew deep in the soil of Norwegian evangelical lutheranism, but one branch of the family broke for the JW's back in the early 60's. One cousin left that cult after her husband became a dedicated serial adulter-er and the elders, including her father, my uncle, kept telling her she had to forgive as he had repented....repeatedly, ad nauseum with each new incident. She finally didn't forgive him, faced what essentially amounted to shunning, left the JW's and her family. I heard plenty of details from her about a whole lot of what went on overall. Somebody bring a big spotlight, like many tight, closed groups they need a huge fukin' dose of daylight shone on their creepy secrets.

Also raised Lutheran, you remind me of my Mom. Issues with my husband years ago, I said "I am to forgive my brother seventy times seven." Mom replied, "well, you're well over 490." HAH

This is what religion is all about, convincing others that it is "God's will" and to "forgive the repentant sinner." Of course there are some wonderful churches and congregations, but by and large religion is to control people for the gain of the people in charge.

True repentance is doing a total 180 of the behavior. A simple "I'm sorry" is just words.

Sexual deviates all over the place in America! Women need to reject the males and then make their names public (in their congregations, etc.). I'll bet these vile men would quickly stop their actions!

Really sad that when it comes to religion appeals courts think complying is negotiable (note, the original judge, Lewis, is female.) But when it's an individual, particularly an individual of color, it's lock 'em up or shoot'em, no need for even due process. Disgusting.
